SWIM DEEP

Watching Swim Deep, it feels as though you’ve been encapsulated and transported back to the 90’s pop punk movement. All baggy T’s, shaggy hair and headbands, this foursome from Birmingham look like they’ve stepped out of a Californian dream and just so happen to be on a stage in Sheffield. They take to the situation with ease, flinging their bodies and instruments around, smirking at each other in somewhat disbelief. Their coolness about the whole thing is quite endearing.

The band are greeted with squawks, whistles and a lot of bellowing- mostly courtesy of teenage girls sporting crop tops and matted hair, embodying the feeling of the performance. Their first few tracks are engulfed by the crowd, with ‘Stray’ as their opening number. There’s a lot of head bopping, swaying and shimmying, the spectators enjoying the cool melodic waves of Swim Deep’s laid back drawl. ‘The Sea’ and ‘Honey’ seem to be firm favourites amongst the fans, almost like anthems, their trademark songs, everyone singing along. Although the set is full of the catchy tunes that have launched them into the music spotlight, it’s also a mixture of newer tracks like ‘Beach Justice’ and ‘Red Lips’, both of which prove that this group of Birmingham boys are developing and maturing into a band of substance.

As the foursome become more energetic themselves, Austin accidentally hitting Cavan with his guitar, the crowd absorb the energy from the boys on stage, contorting and launching themselves in an effort to crowd surf. As the gig draws to an end, the recognisable beat of ‘King City’ kicks in. Laced with a catchy chorus, this track is one of the obvious big hitters and a clear favourite of the entourage that launch into a frantic mosh pit at the foot of the stage. As the song peaks, Austin throws down his guitar with nonchalance and launches himself into the crowd of gyrating teenagers before him. The song dies down and the crowd quietens for thank you’s from the band. It’s clear that this group have made quite the impression. As one onlooker announced in the middle of the set, ‘I’m having a really good time!’ I think that statement sums it up for everyone.

CARA CRAZY: DKNY

It's a rare thing for a model to take the fashion world by storm. So many new faces embark on a modelling career and, although they are successful, disappear into the black hole of models that once were. Every once in a while, there is a model that possesses the ability to captivate an audience of photographers, designers and fans alike, and turn them into her entourage. The super model. With poise, charisma, passion, beauty and hard work, these women are able to mould themselves to briefs with extraordinary precision.  Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christie Turlington etc etc, have all slotted into this category of elite models that manage to launch their careers to super status. Cara Delevingne is the newest recruit of this modelling breed. 2012 saw her crowned Model of the Year, she walked more shows than any other model, including her début for Victoria's Secret, and fronted campaigns such as Burberry, Chanel and Pepe Jeans. In 2013, the youngest Delevingne sister is set to make even larger waves in fashion. It's only February and the phenomenon that is Cara has already posed for her first UK Vogue cover and walked a host of shows including, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chanel and Diane von Furstenberg. On top of this already fantastic start to the year, Cara Delevingne also secured the DKNY spring 2013 campaign, playing every inch the Manhattan girl. There seems to be no end to her talents, or to designers that want her to associated with their brand. This year is set to be big for the model of the moment. In fact, it seems she's set to be big for a while.

THE ROW A/W 2013-14

I'm a massive MK & A fan- have been since around the age of eight. In fact, I recall asking my Mum to cut my hair Mary-Kate and Ashley style circa '99. A bob...layered...that kind of vibe. Anyway, the twins have been, well, muses for me for as long as I can remember. Since they turned their talents to designing, every season The Olsen's have brought a grungy elegance to fashion week and I always wait eagerly for the laid back luxe of the next collection to be revealed. This season didn't disappoint. The pair have done it again...stolen my heart with their drapey pieces, folds of fabric and muted tones. Tailored silhouettes with enough slouch to make them comfortable and aesthetically accommodating. A mixture of silks, furs, wool and leather seemed to be the material pallet of choice. Combining these textures made for a collection of femininity with a hint of a masculine edge thrown in for good measure. Floaty pyjama-esque pieces were incorporated throughout, alongside what seem to be common themes at this seasons New York Fashion Week; wrap features, origami folds, ruffles and skirt slits. Everything completely wearable and all beautiful pieces in their own right.

THAKOON ADDITION A/W 2013-14

Of all the New York fashion week shows so far, Thakoon's Autumn/ Winter offering has been my favourite. Being partial to the slouchy silhouette myself, Thakoon's collection encompasses everything that I could want/ need from  a ready-to-wear line. High waisted cigarette trousers paired with loose fitting shirts, mini skirts combined with oversized jumpers and cocoon jackets. Over sized coats, chunky knits and tuxedo-esque shapes to layer with. Resulting in a look that is not only aesthetically pleasing but simple to emulate and easy to wear.

BLACK ON BLACK ON BLACK

I don't know what it is about the colour black, but it seems to bring a sophisticated edge to every outfit. Of course, this probably has something to do with black being 'slimming', but there's definitely more to it than that. I don't know whether it's because it lends an automatic grunge aspect whilst looking polished at the same time?
Either way, currently I'm obsessed with all black outfits. Black on black on black (on black on black). Often mocked by friends, 'Are you going to a funeral?' being the usual response to my attire, I think that the fluidity of the black on black approach is nothing but flawless minimalism at its best.

S/S 2013 COUTURE

The Spring/Summer couture shows are always a decadent delight, with this year being no exception. From Elie Saab to Valentino, Versace, Dior and Chanel, each collection showcased true passion and beautiful workmanship. Chanel's enchanting mixed-up-fairytale look was also echoed through the designs of Elie Saab and Valention; all traditionally picture perfect pretty, with a bit of a modern mussed up twist. Versace's militant power-dressing stemmed away from the perceived aesthetics of couture and embarked on something fresh whilst incorporating Versace's trademarks- sequins, pinstripes, bling, neon- making the show a sleek and sexy statement among the more angelic offerings.
Of course, I've mentioned my favourites but the collections from Gaultier, Giorgio Armani and Giambattista Valli were just as breathtaking. Gaultier, with its nod to Moroccan culture added a worldy twist to the shows, offering an inspiring westernised version encouraging us to channel our inner Moroccanista. Armani also seemed to draw on foreign inspiration, showcasing a collection with a Turkish slant, whilst incorporating the signature Armani emphasis of the trouser.
